    The Sisters\u2019 Blended Value Project (SBVP) team travelled to Gachoka, Mbeere South, in Embu County, Kenya, last month, expecting to document the story of a school run by the Little Servants of the Sacred Heart. The school was one of the social enterprises registered under SBVP, an initiative that supports Catholic Sisters in strengthening the sustainability of their social ministries. The assignment seemed straightforward: capture the school\u2019s growth, its contribution to the community, and the Sisters\u2019 efforts to build a more sustainable future for their ministry.<\/p>\n

    \n

    But the most revealing story was not in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It was at the Liviero Dispensary, a modest health facility within the sisters\u2019 wider community. The dispensary serves families living with limited economic opportunities, where poverty can turn basic needs such as healthcare into difficult decisions. What first appeared to be another part of the congregation\u2019s ministry soon became a window into something much larger.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Liviero Dispensary is in a part of Embu where life can be demanding, and resources are limited. For families already struggling to meet household expenses, the cost of seeking medical attention can become another burden, particularly when there is no medical insurance to fall back on. For mothers who need maternity services, the consequences of that gap can be especially serious.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201cThe mothers we have here, especially those who come for delivery, often have no cover,\u201d says Sr. Rose Catherine Muthoni, who serves in the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    The problem, then, is not simply whether healthcare exists. It is whether a person can afford to reach it, whether they can pay for it and whether they feel they have somewhere to turn when circumstances become difficult. A health facility can only serve its purpose when people can actually use it. For families living on very little, even the cost of accessing a service can become a barrier.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This is where the sisters\u2019 presence becomes important. The dispensary brings healthcare closer to people who might otherwise delay seeking treatment, while the sisters\u2019 long relationship with the community gives the facility something that cannot be bought with equipment or funding: familiarity and trust.<\/span><\/p>\n

    That trust is particularly visible among mothers who receive prenatal care at the dispensary. They may leave to deliver their babies at a hospital, but they return to the sisters in the dispensary. This helps maintain a relationship that extends beyond the treatment room.<\/span><\/p>\n

    There is a quiet power in that trust. It suggests that the sisters are not simply providing a medical service but accompanying people through different moments of their lives. Behind a patient may be a mother without insurance, a family struggling to pay school fees, or someone who has postponed treatment because there was always another expense that seemed more urgent.<\/span><\/p>\n

    That broader understanding of their ministry is evident in the smallest details of the dispensary. During her time in the community, Sr. Rose Catherine noticed the effects of miraa chewing on the dental health of some community members. The facility had a dental unit that was no longer functioning, and rather than allowing the equipment to remain unused, she worked to have it repaired.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cI repaired the dental unit because it was not working. Now it is okay. I am just looking for somebody to work with there,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The story of the dental unit may seem minor beside the larger challenges facing the community. Yet it says something important about how social ministry works in practice: needs are often discovered not through reports or statistics, but through paying attention. Someone notices that a service is missing, asks why it is unavailable and looks for a way to restore it.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n

    The sisters\u2019 challenge is to sustain these services while continuing to respond to changing needs. That is where social enterprise becomes important. A school, a health facility, or another social ministry may begin with a strong sense of mission, but mission alone does not cover equipment, staff, maintenance, supplies, and the many other costs required to keep an institution operating.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    This is one of the realities many sister-led ministries face. Their ministries often serve communities where the need is greatest, yet the people they serve may have the least ability to pay for those services. Sustainability, therefore, requires more than goodwill; it requires resources, partnerships, enterprise thinking and people willing to invest in institutions that create social value.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This is where the Sisters\u2019 Blended Value Project becomes important. Through social enterprise development, access to finance, markets and partnerships, SBVP is equipping congregations to make their ministries more sustainable without losing sight of the people they were created to serve. For the Little Servants of the Sacred Heart, the task is not simply to keep the dispensary open, but to build the capacity, partnerships and resources that will keep its doors open for the families who need it most.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Because compassion can open the door, but sustainability is what keeps it open.<\/span><\/p>\n
