The greatest focus is to leverage technology in higher education to ensure that graduates achieve all entrepreneurial skills.<\/p>\n<p>The Event was attended by delegates from Kenya, Botswana, Rwanda, Kuwait, the United Kingdom all interested in building entrepreneurial universities that nurture future talents. Among the team are leading scholars from Strathmore University (Dr Murithi, Dr Mungai, Dr Gachambi, Dr Ominde, and Dr Muigai) and Swansea university (Dr Ebie, Prof Pickernell, Prof Jones, Dr Doneddu, Prof Huxtable-Thomas) that are collaborating on the reach. The team is to be supported by three research assistants Dr Chris Cox based Swansea University and Morris Kateti and Phylis Korir based at Strathmore University.<\/p>\n<p>Dr William Murithi, the country lead and co-PI, introduced the session stating the aim of the workshop of bringing together the two universities and stakeholders to share ideas, research and strategies to cultivate sustainable capacity to empower entrepreneurial universities. He expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting its potential to empower early-career researchers and strengthen university-industry ties.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Samuel Ebie, the international team Lead, and Deputy Director, Knowledge Exchange in the Research Institute in Innovation &amp; Entrepreneurship of School of Management in Swansea University outlined the project\u2019s objective of building sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems within Kenyan universities by emphasizing the need for robust frameworks that not only support students but also align with national economic priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Ruth Kiraka, a professor of strategy and entrepreneurship at Strathmore University and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub Lead, welcomed the guest and shared Strathmore University\u2019s ecosystem, which includes programs for human capital development, access to technology centres, networking opportunities, and financial support initiatives. She also emphasized the importance of cultivating an entrepreneurial culture through case studies and mentorship across the university.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Edward Mungai, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning and Development shared about Strathmore Entrepreneurial Journey as a University. Strathmore University\u2019s vision \u201cTo be a Leading entrepreneurial university, positively impacting society by doing excellent work\u201d. To exemplify this vision, Dr Mungai shared the various entrepreneurial initiatives that Strathmore had undertaken from developing new courses and setting up new schools with the newest one being the Strathmore Engineering School, infrastructural development with state-of-the-art building such as the Thomas Moore Building, and the new STEM building, Strathmore Research and Consulting Centre (SRCC) to aid in commercializing research and providing academics with a consulting opportunities, setting up a quality catering services, and the Strathmore Foundation to generate resources for the students scholarship and institutional development. All<\/p>\n<p>Dr Patricia Gachambi a Senior Lecture ta SBS and project team member, presented on \u201cBrining the industry to the classroom\u201d. Dr Gachambi emphasizes that to cultivate the required capacity for to transform to entrepreneurial universities, there should be a mutual symbiosis between universities and industries. She unpacked the various aspects required for universities and industries linkages where collaboration is key to enable universities to commercialize their knowledge and innovations, gain greater access to industry experience and access the needed funding.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Murithi shared on \u201cBuilding Entrepreneurial University Models\u201d. For universities to transition to entrepreneurial universities, there is need to build an ecosystem that supports entrepreneurial activities. Therefore, universities should be able to (1) define their entrepreneurial ecosystems, (2) identify enablers, both internally and externally, (3) develop activities that enhance teaching for -and-about entrepreneurship, experiential learning, (4) promote innovation , research and development, and finally (5) identify their aspiration for the building entrepreneurial university model (i.e. startups and spinoffs, developing entrepreneurial mindsets among students and staff, influencing national and continental policy framework, impacting local and other indigenous communities and research and development leading to innovative products and patents.<\/p>\n<p>Professor David Pickernell A professor of Small Business and Enterprise Development Policy, and Director Research Institute in Innovation &amp; Entrepreneurship of School of Management in Swansea University shared on the research and development in the field of entrepreneurial university highlighting the various factors that influence their development and the different typologies of entrepreneurial universities. He emphasised that entrepreneurial universities differ based on their geographical location, whether located at the periphery of cities, or rural areas given the stakeholders, resources and unique features available. He further emphasised on the need to support graduate entrepreneurship to develop the capacity and realis eth aims of an entrepreneurial university.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop included a panel discussion moderated by Dr Ebie, which highlighted the key areas that the research project can focus on cultivating sustainable capacity to empower Kenyan entrepreneurial universities and nurture future talent. The session highlighted four key areas of focus during the project phase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strengthening Entrepreneurial Ecosystems<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For universities to cultivate sustainable capacities to nurture future talents there is need to first define their entrepreneurial ecosystems and then work towards strengthening them. From the workshop it was clear that there is no \u2018one size fits all\u2019 entrepreneurial ecosystems model. There exist different models due to geographical locations, availability of partners, resources, innovations and research capacities. Therefore, each university must seek to work towards developing a suitable and supportive entrepreneurial university ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research-Driven Capacity Building<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Further in creating sustainable models for university building capacity for research, innovation and development should be at the centre stage. In the project, the aim is to conduct research and identify critical success factors for entrepreneurial ecosystems within the Kenyan Universities and use these insights to design tailored programs. In order to do this, the ongoing project study will collect data from diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, and industry leaders. The goal is to create a capacity building framework that Kenyan universities can use to establish effective entrepreneurial ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>The session also incorporated the introduction of an innovative transformation process model which maps the inputs, processes, and outcomes of higher education institutions transitioning to entrepreneurial hubs. This model will serve as a guide for universities aiming to align their internal structures and resources with entrepreneurial goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategic Curriculum Development and Risk Management<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The discussion emphasized the significance of incorporating decision-making roles and consultancy provisions into academic settings. Also addressing the importance of risk management in attracting accomplished professionals to advance research excellence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bridging the University-Industry Gap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The collaboration aims to bridge the gap between academia and job market\/industries. Focusing on practical knowledge through collaborative curriculum co-creation, industry-academia linkages to offer internships, works placement, industrial trials and knowledge transfer and resource-sharing initiatives rather than theoretical knowledge. It is important to note that including the industries during curriculum reviews was also emphasized to help ensure that all what is taught in classroom aligns to what the industries need and able to solve market-based problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrating Emerging Technologies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Pickernell from Swansea University highlighted the importance of integration of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence into entrepreneurial programs. He stressed that universities must embrace these technologies to remain relevant in a digital-first world. He called for policies that are not only effective but also ethical in guiding the adoption of AI and other digital tools. Universities were encouraged to share best practices and leverage the expertise of their faculty to develop tech-driven and student-centred programs.<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, the project implementing team will ensure that they organize a broader workshop with industry stakeholders to validate findings and research developing metrics to measure success of entrepreneurial initiatives including incubators. Also, the team will investigate what metrics that are currently used at university levels in Kenya to measure graduate entrepreneurship program success and develop assessment tools for higher education institutions to evaluate their own entrepreneurial ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration between Strathmore University and Swansea University marks a significant step in advancing graduate entrepreneurship in Kenya. By leveraging their collective expertise, these institutions aim to empower Kenyan graduates with the skills, knowledge, and networks they need to succeed.
