Sustainability is at the forefront of global discussions as climate change and societal problems become more pressing. I invited Jess Donovan, an expert on sustainability, to share her expertise with my undergraduate class. Her unique expertise on the intersection between coaching and environmental sustainability helped the students to gain different perspectives on these two disciplines, and also to appreciate how they support one another. I was also fortunate to get a chance to sit down with her and gain some insight on her career journey:

What is your area of expertise?

I work with cause- driven leaders all over the world to find more fulfilment and success in their lives and careers, by returning to our true nature, our authentic selves and tapping into the guidance within. I believe that to make a real and lasting impact in this world you must first be in alignment with yourself. Nature has a way of restoring balance and to be successful- so must we.

While I focus on executive coaching, I promote a holistic approach to leadership allowing people to explore their full potential as leaders and bosses, family members, spouses and as individuals. My approach is based on the principle that to be truly successful, we must embrace and embody all these aspects of our lives fully.

For most of us, we grew up with the notion of work life balance, which is in itself misleading, as rarely is there balance. I rather help my clients to understand their own versions of work life integration, a unique space for every individual but where you can best find your own personal power and inspiration.

I use proven leadership coaching principles to guide my clients to hone their leadership skills, to establish boundaries, to facilitate growth, navigate adversity, loss and grief and achieve transformation creating more empowered and abundant lives.

What inspired you to consider a career in sustainability?

Born and raised in a small town on Cape Cod Massachusetts, the daughter of a local fisherman, my experience from a very early age has helped me appreciate the dependence that people have on the planet. I started my journey as an excited young graduate with a much-coveted internship in Washington DC. Inspired to make my own mark in the world I began a career in conservation. I worked hard and had opportunities to grow and travel that were typically beyond my age and experience. I travelled the world, from the Amazon Forests of South America, to the islands of Southeast Asia and the vast rangelands and dense tropical forests of Africa, I experienced first-hand various cultures and their own relationship with nature. Throughout all of this I developed a very deep-rooted appreciation for people and their stewardship of nature. It is this appreciation that has shaped all aspects of my career. I believe in sustainability both for the natural world and for individuals who are trying to create it.

Where has this career taken you?

Driven by my love for nature and inspired by the beauty and challenges I spent 20 years in Liberia, West Africa, where I worked to find practical solutions to the complex trade-offs that nature conservation often demands. I helped build these solutions in a post conflict, fragile state where nature provided for people but was often not on the top of their mind when it came to basic needs. So more often than not I had to get really creative and most importantly I had to listen to what was being said and learn to leave my own assumptions behind. Skills that have helped me in all aspects of both my professional and personal life.

In Liberia, I played an active role in the country’s reconstruction. I worked with some of the world’s largest corporations and most influential people to help the country heal after nearly 2 decades of conflict and war. I helped write policies and laws on climate change, sustainable development, protected areas and regenerative agriculture. Through this work I have helped to protect some of the world’s most important places, as well as to set up and build organisations that are responsible for sustaining them. I fell in love with the country and its people.

What inspired you to become a coach?

For over 20 years I have lived in foreign countries, I led cause inspired teams, built organisations and helped individuals grow in their careers. Working with diverse and multinational teams, I did great things. I also witnessed first hand the pressure that this work can create when careers, personal commitments, causes collide. I know how hard it can be to differentiate between the work and who you are. I also know what happens when you allow the work or the cause to surpass your own boundaries and self-care.

For me, this was a labour of love, an unwavering commitment to making a meaningful impact despite the challenge of both a difficult context. I have to admit, sometimes it seemed like the cards were all stacked against me, being a young woman in a male dominated environment, a stranger in a foreign land. Throughout my career, I often had to work even harder to make sure my voice was heard and taken seriously. Most of the time this was self-motivated. I learned about leadership on my feet and through trial and error, but these experiences have shaped the leader I am today and the experience I bring to my coaching practice. Perseverance and resilience have been my story. They have shaped who I am and allowed me to be here today to share this story with others.

Widowed at 36, by a terrible car accident, the mother of two baby girls in a country I had grown to call my own, but where I would never be allowed citizenship, I have known grief, trauma and loneliness. People often describe me as being strong, but that never seemed to fit. I did not feel strong, I felt like a survivor, I did whatever it took to make things work, sometimes to my own detriment. I jumped into work and other outside influences to numb the pain I really felt, I was surrounded by people but yet very much alone. I had no idea the effect that the trauma really had on my life until the avoidance caught up with me as eventually it always does. I hit my own personal low and began to question everything I had done.

What happened then?

Because of this, I have had to dig deep, to get real, to feel and process that pain, for it was the only way for me to rise from that very dark place. This was the beginning of my transformation process, one that took me down before I found my way back up…but the results were worth it. I left a career that up until then had been my very definition. I started my own company looking for a new way of doing things, where cause driven leadership does not come with unrealistic sacrifice, where one can really walk the walk of empathetic and compassionate leadership of the teams they lead, and where individuals are able not only to develop but to truly honour their own boundaries in order to live a more empowered life . I started coaching to help others bring this into their own leadership journeys. Perseverance and resilience have been my story. They have shaped who I am and allowed me to be here today to share this story with others.

What is it that you enjoy about coaching?

Coaching is a transformational process. I have worked with coaches for the last 10+ years and I have seen real and tangible results both for myself and for the teams I have led. Each time I have entered a coaching engagement I have seem marked improvements in performance. I believe in the power of coaching. It is an extremely effective tool to help people navigate challenges and to find solutions to those challenges. But coaching is also about discipline and accountability. Coachign helps us all to take ideas and to create implementable strategies to bring then into being. I absolutely love helping my clients to unleash their potential and then to clearly define the pathways towards these goals. Whether you are looking to improve your leadership skills, empower your team, gain better outputs and impact, or achieve greater work life integration, coaching can help.

What have you learned through this transformation?

Through this process I have learned so much about myself, the world, and how to achieve my goals without sacrificing so much of myself. I have learned to set and maintain healthy boundaries. I have learned to be an empowered empathetic leader without allowing others to knock my own core. I have learned to live through, feel and process grief so that it does not get the best of you. I have learned to take back my power and to live a cause driven life while still pursuing my own self-care.

What is it you hope to achieve now and in the future?

I set up my company, Resilient Future Advisors (resilientfutureadvisors.com) to help purpose driven leaders and teams to deliver on their missions, change the world and to thrive while doing it. I hope that bringing my training as well as my life experience into my coaching practice I can help others to discover the best and most natural versions of themselves, so that they in turn can bring out the best in others and inspire the change we need in the world.

[39
165
post-38644","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-sustainability

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v20.2.1 (Yoast SEO v27.8) -
