Organizations the world over are grappling with disruptors including digital transformation, global competition, market shifts, and changing consumer trends. The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in new challenges and opportunities that companies are still trying to navigate. A company\u2019s ability to innovate and tap into the creativity and innovative ideas of its employees, partners, suppliers, and other stakeholders will determine how successful it will be in driving growth, improving performance, and maintaining its competitive edge.<\/p>\n

Open the Lines of Communication<\/b><\/p>\n

The job of a CEO is to define and articulate a company\u2019s mission and take an active role in fulfilling that mission. Are the lines of communication open? When a CEO engages with only his most senior advisers and executives and is inaccessible or disconnected from ninety percent of his employees then he may miss out on many potentially brilliant ideas. Additionally, many innovative ideas may not be voiced because employees lack the confidence to speak up in the presence of the CEO. Effective leadership that spurs innovation and risk-taking is about opening the lines of communication from top to bottom. Is the company\u2019s structure and culture designed to foster innovation? The leader does not necessarily need to be highly innovative. However, by championing and supporting the efforts of others, a good leader can provide the necessary guidance, backing, and sponsorship. By instituting forums and roundtables with employees and other stakeholders, a CEO can allow the voices at all levels of the organization to be heard. Another idea is to create a team that serves as the eyes and ears of the CEO that penetrates all levels of the organization. This will help CEOs to be aware of the situation on the ground and allow them to act more quickly to seize opportunities that may arise.<\/p>\n

Maintain Strategic Perspective<\/b><\/p>\n

Clearing defining the kind of innovation that will drive growth and meet strategic objectives and articulating this to employees will help them understand the CEO\u2019s mindset and vision for the organization. It will also challenge them to think more deeply and not just offer familiar and incremental ideas. What are the overall strategic objectives and what does the organization aspire to be? The innovation and change strategy should be tied to the organizational strategy. Additionally, CEOs must not forget the importance of examining the environment and being agile enough to adapt to changing market or industry trends. If Leaders become too bogged down in the details of what is happening in their organization, they may not act quickly enough to identify and respond to external challenges and shifts. Delivering customer value must also remain at the heart of any decisions made by the company. Keeping a finger on the pulse of consumer trends is vital to ensure that any measures taken to innovate correspond with meeting the changing demands of the market.<\/p>\n

Replace Criticism with Constructive Feedback<\/b><\/p>\n

Once the lines of communication are open, encourage debate and allow people to voice their opinions by providing a supportive and safe environment. To signal to employees that the organization supports innovation, independent thinking, and risk-taking, do not belittle or harshly criticize your employees. Provide constructive feedback instead. Applaud their efforts to be creative and think outside the box. Point out the merits and flaws of their ideas tactfully and provide guidance. When strong leadership comes into play, employees feel appreciated and will be inspired to continue tackling difficult issues and finding creative ways to overcome challenges. However, if their ideas are ridiculed or they feel uncomfortable voicing their opinions, the Senior Leadership will effectively stamp out and stifle employee creativity leaving their staff feeling demoralized and demotivated. Honouring employee efforts and providing the right skills and training will go a long way to building a culture that promotes innovation and co-creation.<\/p>\n

Successful leaders combine both push and pull techniques. It is important to establish deadlines, accountability, and deliverables (push) but it is also imperative that people are motivated and inspired (pull) to attain the desired outcomes.<\/p>\n

Employees may respond to innovation differently. Some may be passionate advocates while others may be very uncomfortable about change. In order to effectively harness group creativity, the right connections, and networks that bring together employees that can examine the potential of their individual ideas and synergize their efforts will help these ideas to be realized more quickly and effectively. New ideas tend to spur other ideas. To capitalize on this domino effect, cross-functional project teams can be set up cross-fertilize ideas, and tap into a variety of expertise and different perspectives. Shaping innovative networks can be considered both an art and a science. Removing unproductive individuals and bottlenecks may help promote the flow of ideas and sharing of knowledge. Decentralizing these networks may also speed up the process.<\/p>\n

It is imperative that leaders are skilled in fostering innovation and leading change efforts. However, the stark reality is that most Senior Leaders have no formal training or experience that they can leverage to guide others.<\/p>\n
