When something is just off in your team\u2019s chemistry, if you do not address it, you will not have a high-performing team. Consequently, your team’s output will suffer. This will have a ripple effect on other teams within the organization because of the interconnected nature of work output. Collective organizational deliverables can be at jeopardy if just one team is underperforming. However, imagine the scale of the impact if many teams are underperforming.<\/p>\n

\n

Team cohesion is the foundation of a high-performing corporate team. It reflects the degree to which team members work together effectively, align their efforts toward common goals, and share a sense of unity. When a team operates cohesively, communication flows more smoothly, productivity increases, and the work environment becomes more enjoyable. However, fostering a strong sense of cohesion requires intentional effort, leadership, and the right strategies. Without this cohesion, your carefully crafted strategy will fail.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Foster open communication<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Communication is the bedrock of any successful team. When team members feel free to share ideas, concerns, and feedback, trust and understanding thrive. Leaders should encourage transparency and ensure that everyone\u2019s voice is heard. However, if the leaders in your organization have not been trained to communicate successfully and their team members are also unable to do so, the consequences can be devastating. Is good communication simply intuitive or does it need some instruction? In a fast-paced world where time is money and there is little margin for error, can you really afford to have a team that is lacking in this critical skill set? Do you have a robust communication strategy and policies in place?<\/p>\n

Define clear roles and responsibilities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Uncertainty about one\u2019s role can create confusion and disrupt team harmony. When team members understand their specific roles and responsibilities, they can focus on their tasks without overstepping and unconsciously irritating their colleagues. Clear role definitions minimize overlaps and confusion. Leaders should delegate tasks according to individual strengths, allowing team members to feel empowered and motivated by their work. One of the most common mistakes new leaders make is failure to delegate. As an organization are you walking with your leaders and ensuring they feel supported and are trained to be effective?<\/p>\n

Build trust and psychological safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Trust is essential for any team\u2019s cohesion. When people trust each other, they are more likely to collaborate, share innovative ideas, and resolve conflicts constructively. Psychological safety, where team members feel safe to take risks and make mistakes, is critical to this trust-building process. However, the culture of an organization can be a limiting factor.<\/p>\n

Do Leaders in the organization model vulnerability and openness? Or is there a culture of playing the blame game and harshly criticizing and punishing mistakes. When everyone in the organization is out to protect themselves and deflect scrutiny, psychological safety will evaporate. Coaching is a useful tool to help re-build trust. Team building sessions can also help to break down barriers and help people to work together rather than against each other.<\/p>\n

Foster a culture of respect and minimize jealousy by recognizing and celebrating everyone\u2019s achievements, both large and small, to build confidence and camaraderie.<\/p>\n

Promote collaboration over competition<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Furthermore, while healthy competition can drive performance, excessive rivalry can undermine cohesion. To create a more collaborative atmosphere, teams should focus on shared goals rather than individual success. Collective goals allow everyone to be invested in the outcome thereby promoting collaboration. Recognize everyone\u2019s unique talents and their contributions.<\/p>\n

Encourage social interaction and team building<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In an Executive Class of Senior Managers that I was teaching, I met a very inspiring Manager. This Manager had a team that continually surpassed expectations. She exuded an aura of quiet authority. The other Managers were keen to know how she got such great results. She shared her secret with the class stating that her team met for lunch every month and they shared both professional and personal struggles. Shared decision-making was also encouraged so that each team member took ownership of collective goals. She had made the effort to create a positive micro-culture within her team that was characterised by support, open communication and strong team cohesion.<\/p>\n

Social interactions outside of the usual work environment can help build stronger personal relationships, which, in turn, strengthen professional collaboration. Team-building activities foster trust and understanding that can enhance day-to-day communication.<\/p>\n

Provide opportunities for professional development<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When employees feel supported in their growth, they are more likely to feel invested in the team\u2019s success. Offering opportunities for skill development shows that you care about their personal and professional advancement. Organizations can offer access to training programs or workshops that enhance technical and soft skills. Team cohesion cannot happen overnight, but corporate teams can significantly enhance their performance and morale with the right strategies and a consistent effort to foster trust, communication, and collaboration.<\/p>\n
