    From November 19th to 20th, 2024, Strathmore University Business School, in partnership with the University of Kisubi, Uganda, hosted a dynamic two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) programme under the Porticus grant. The programme was designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge they need to create and deliver impactful training that fosters lasting change. The overarching goal was to empower trainers to build engaging learning environments, tailor their approaches to diverse audiences, and create training initiatives that have a sustainable impact.<\/p>\n

    Building Strong Training Foundations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The ToT programme had a clear focus on providing the participants with practical skills and strategies. The key objectives included:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Developing Training Competencies:<\/strong> Trainers were equipped with the tools and strategies necessary to design and deliver effective training sessions that truly resonate with their learners.<\/li>\n
    2. Mastering Training Techniques:<\/strong> The programme emphasized understanding adult learning principles, facilitation strategies, and different teaching methods so trainers can adapt their style to the needs of the learners.<\/li>\n
    3. Enhancing Evaluation Skills:<\/strong> Participants were trained to assess the effectiveness of their sessions, gather feedback, and continuously refine their approach to improve learning outcomes.<\/li>\n
    4. Integrating Technology in Training:<\/strong> Trainers learned how to incorporate digital tools and platforms into their teaching, making their sessions more accessible and impactful.<\/li>\n
    5. Encouraging Sustainability:<\/strong> The programme emphasized how to design training that creates lasting benefits, not just for individuals but for their communities as well.<\/li>\n
    6. Promoting Collaborative Learning:<\/strong> The ToT provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas and best practices, fostering a network of skilled trainers who can support each other in their ongoing professional development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Insights from Dr. Freshia Waweru: A Call to Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Dr. Freshia Waweru, one of the programme\u2019s key facilitators, started by reflecting on Africa\u2019s potential and challenges. She pointed out that despite Africa holding 70% of the world\u2019s resources and having the largest young population, it continues to face challenges in managing its wealth sustainably. Dr. Waweru\u2019s message was clear: as trainers, they are not just teaching content; they are shaping the leaders of tomorrow. \u201cThis is not just a project\u2014it\u2019s a call for us to hold each other accountable,\u201d she emphasized. Her words reminded the trainers that they hold a powerful role in preparing the next generation of leaders, and that they should approach their work with the responsibility it deserves.<\/p>\n

      The Heart of Effective Teaching: Making an Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Dr. Beatrice Njeru took the stage next, guiding the participants through a reflective discussion on what makes a truly effective trainer. She highlighted the importance of shifting the focus from merely delivering objectives to thinking about the outcomes of each session. The trainers shared characteristics of the teachers who had made an impact in their lives. Words like \u201capproachable,\u201d \u201ccreative,\u201d \u201cinspirational,\u201d and \u201cengaging\u201d came up frequently, while less favorable memories were shaped by teachers who were \u201charsh,\u201d \u201cunaccommodating,\u201d and \u201ccomplicated.\u201d<\/p>\n

      The key takeaway from this discussion was that it\u2019s not enough to be an authoritative figure in the classroom; trainers must connect with their students on an emotional level, making them feel seen, heard, and understood. \u201cGood teaching is great. Effective teaching is a calling. Unforgettable teaching is a character,\u201d Dr. Njeru said, underscoring the idea that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge but about inspiring change.<\/p>\n

      Authenticity and Adaptability: The Trainer\u2019s Journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      On the second day, Dr. Freshia Waweru invited the participants to think about their journey as trainers and the challenges they have faced in their own teaching careers. \u201cThink back 14 years ago\u2014how far have we come?\u201d she asked. Reflecting on the evolution of teaching methods, she stressed the importance of being authentic as a trainer. \u201cDon\u2019t try to copy someone else\u2019s style,\u201d she advised, \u201cFind what works for you and be true to that.\u201d She encouraged trainers to embrace their strengths, experiment with different methods, and continuously grow in their craft.<\/p>\n

      Dr. Waweru outlined a simple yet powerful process for planning an effective training session:<\/p>\n

      1. Identify your strengths.<\/strong><\/li>\n
      2. Define your goals.<\/strong><\/li>\n
      3. Experiment with methods.<\/strong><\/li>\n
      4. Be authentic.<\/strong><\/li>\n
      5. Keep learning.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Key Takeaways: Growing as Trainers<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        As the training concluded, participants walked away with key insights that they could immediately apply in their work. Some of the most valuable lessons included:<\/p>\n

        • The importance of using different tools and methods to cater to diverse learning styles.<\/li>\n
        • Being flexible and open to trying new approaches, rather than sticking to one rigid style.<\/li>\n
        • Agility is key trainers must be ready to adapt their approach to different situations.<\/li>\n
        • It\u2019s essential to \u201cown the room\u201d and establish presence, but without losing authenticity.<\/li>\n
        • Continuous learning and staying informed about current events is crucial for remaining relevant.<\/li>\n
        • Finally, Dr. Waweru reminded them not to fall into a \u201cknow-it-all\u201d mentality but to remain humble and ready for divine intervention when needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Conclusion: Shaping the Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          The two-day ToT programme at the University of Kisubi was more than just a training\u2014it was a call to action. The trainers left not only with practical skills to enhance their sessions but also with a renewed sense of purpose. They were reminded that as educators, they play a critical role in shaping the future of their students and their communities. By embracing a more dynamic, authentic, and sustainable approach to teaching, they can create positive, lasting change that extends far beyond the classroom.
