    On October 31 and November 1, 2024, Strathmore University Business School, in partnership with the Africa Center for Studies of the United States (ACUS) at the University of Witwatersrand, held the inaugural Amplifying African Voices for Strategic Action<\/em> (AFSA) Conference. This groundbreaking event convened scholars, industry leaders, policymakers, and thought leaders from across the globe to shape Africa\u2019s position in addressing global challenges and opportunities.<\/p>\n

    The Conference spotlighted Kenya\u2019s proactive role on the world stage, guided by a foreign policy principle: \u201cwhen Africa thrives, Kenya thrives.\u201d<\/em> This view provided a framework for discussions around aligning Kenya\u2019s foreign policy with a continent-wide agenda. Topics covered included critical challenges\u2014such as food security, poverty, unemployment, climate change, and gender equality\u2014that extend beyond national borders to affect the entire continent. Participants recognized the importance of a united African approach in tackling these issues to achieve sustainable, inclusive growth for all.<\/p>\n

    One of the key sessions underscored the role of information and data, where speakers highlighted the necessity for governments to utilize data strategically in areas such as debt management, decision-making, and public engagement. Panelists argued that information is foundational to all human rights and must be protected by governments to ensure transparency, justice, and equitable development. This perspective underscores the importance of informational rights, advocating for a secure data infrastructure to empower communities and drive economic and social progress.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    The conference further delved into the complex challenges of maintaining peace and security within the Horn of Africa. Despite efforts by global powers and regional organizations, progress has often been hindered by differing agendas and priorities among member states. Panelists highlighted that effective policymaking is critical as Africa undergoes structural shifts, and that collective alignment is essential to navigate these changes. They emphasized the need to reconnect with Africa’s original vision for unity, fostering collaboration across borders to drive stability and development.<\/p>\n

    A key presentation focused on the power of media and communication in bridging Africa\u2019s interests with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Speakers stressed that accurate and responsible communication is essential, especially in combating misinformation, which can undermine development efforts. The media was recognized for its crucial role in disseminating information on vital issues like climate change adaptation, financing, and accountability. Attendees also discussed the importance of youth involvement in decision-making, particularly in climate action, to ensure that the continent\u2019s future remains resilient and sustainable.<\/p>\n

    The AFSA Conference concluded with a renewed commitment to a cooperative and strategic approach, where African nations, organizations, and citizens work together to meet shared goals. The event underscored that Africa\u2019s future is deeply connected to global developments and that a unified front will be key to addressing pressing challenges. By staying true to a vision of a prosperous, just, and sustainable Africa, the AFSA Conference has set the stage for continued collaboration and impactful action across the continent.<\/p>\n
