The Wanyange area in Jinja, Uganda, is experiencing notably dry conditions, which have significantly impacted the local ecosystem and agriculture. Long stretches without significant rainfall are indicative of this dry spell, which causes parched soils and lower water levels in nearby water bodies. The scarcity of water poses challenges for farmers, who rely heavily on consistent rain for their farming activities, and for residents whose access to clean water is diminished. The arid environment also heightens the risk of bushfires and soil erosion, further exacerbating the environmental and socio-economic difficulties faced by the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among those facing challenges in the dry conditions of Wanyange, Jinja, are the Missionary Benedictine Sisters. Their charism is to spread the gospel to people who have not heard it and to those who have stopped practicing their faith. The sisters’ mission has become increasingly difficult due to the harsh environmental conditions, which has significantly impacted their daily operations and outreach efforts. The scarcity of water and other resources complicates their ability to maintain their facilities and support the local community effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, the Missionary Benedictine Sisters in Jinja attended the Sisters Blended Value Project (SBVP) Social Enterprise Programme (SEP) Scale and were inspired by the challenge presented to them during the training. Within just three months of participating in the programme, the sisters have ingeniously implemented an irrigation system to water their plants, a unique approach in the face of dry conditions. This initiative has also empowered them to begin large-scale sugarcane farming for commercial purposes. The success of this venture not only generates finances for the congregation but also provides support for the aged sisters in their community, a testament to their determination to overcome environmental challenges and ensure sustainability for their community.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Sisters Blended Value Project is a beacon of hope committed to transforming social ministries into sustainable social enterprises. By providing comprehensive guidance and support, the project has empowered catholic sisters like the Missionary Benedictine Sisters to develop self-sustaining ventures.
