Technology, global economic woes, climate change and the recent pandemic have triggered vast changes in society. A renewed sense of community and collaboration has emerged from these challenges. Trust is quickly becoming the global and most valued currency of the modern era. As leaders it is imperative to build trust with our staff, consumers, business partners and communities. In this new world, our “trust score” will be the only metric that people will use to decide if and how they will engage with us. Are you aware of who you are, how people experience you and your impact and influence in your environment? Do you trust yourself? Self-mastery is the key to building confidence in yourself and gaining the trust and cooperation of others.

Self-Mastery

Self-Mastery is the control of one’s nature. You need to understand who you are, how you react and think and how this affects how you show up as a leader. Do you need to exercise more self-discipline to respond more productively in the face of challenges?

Personal mastery can help you deal with stress more productively and master your emotions so that you make better decisions and solve problems effectively. As a leader, self-mastery will help you to make the best possible contributions to the success of your business. You will be able to leverage your personal experience, knowledge, and unique skill-sets to develop powerful strategies that engage and inspire your team. The essence of leadership is inspiration through example, which requires a high degree of personal mastery. Before you can inspire the most desirable possible qualities in your team, you must first display them yourself.

Ego

Ego is an essential element of your personal brand, but it must be under your control. Leaders with inflated egos can overestimate their abilities and underestimate the skills and efforts of their team members. A degree of ego to understand your strengths and develop your confidence is important. However, excessive ego can negatively impact your reputation and make you undesirable to work with and ultimately undermine your authority in the organization. To truly lead, and make a difference in the world, you must always start with yourself.

Self-Awareness

Aside from the financially desperate, employees do not work for money alone. They tend to gravitate to what inspires a larger sense of purpose or passion. A leader’s goal should be to align an employee’s values and aspirations with the goals and aspirations of the company. The awareness of how our emotions impact what we are doing is a fundamental emotional competence. It is crucial for leaders to understand how their own emotions can influence their interactions with colleagues and direct reports.

Attuning to the streams of feeling that shape how people perceive, think, and do, helps leaders develop an inner rudder that informs their interactions with their teams. Once leaders understand their own inner emotional landscape, they can guide others to do the same.

A mentor can help a mentee develop self-awareness by first helping them delineate their personal values, goals, and motivations. Asking the right questions helps to prompt a mentees’ thinking to identify what hidden factors drive their behavior. Candid feedback that is constructive and does not squash morale is also essential to this process.

Self-Management

Emotional fireworks during challenging times and periods of change can completely derail even the most powerful team. Managing disruptive and impulsive emotions is an emotional competence that helps people think clearly and stay focused under pressure. Leaders need to set examples by remaining calm and unflappable during stormy times. Disruptive emotions can spread virally and infect the whole team. Leaders can guide their teams to be resilient and adaptable by maintaining positive attitudes and not resorting to worst-case scenario thinking. Additionally, coaching direct reports to engage in big picture and innovative thinking as well as contingency planning can also help diffuse tension. Furthermore, to instill conscientiousness and trustworthiness in employees, leaders need to lead by example rather than ruling through fear.

Social-Awareness

Empathy is the ability to read another’s emotions and respond to a person’s unspoken concerns and feelings. By understanding their own emotional terrain, leaders can become adept at sensing emotional cues that can in turn help them to read the political and social currents in an organization. This emotional sensitivity can help leaders to anticipate and recognize the unspoken needs of employees as well as clients. Furthermore, leaders should take an active interest in employees’ concerns in order to keep them motivated and committed to organizational goals. Demonstrating sensitivity to employees helps to break down communication barriers and cultivates an environment where diverse views are valued and every voice is heard.

Social-Skills

It is widely accepted that the group mind is far more intelligent than that of the individual. How can a leader inspire collaboration and cooperation to ensure a team works towards shared goals? Driving employees and coming across as abrasive and insensitive will only breed hostility. An incompetent manager sees people as either allies or enemies and has an insatiable need for recognition. A large dose of humility coupled with the ability to nurture opportunities for collaboration can help transform that manager into a leader. Team synergy can be fostered by building rapport and keeping others in the loop. A leader needs to model qualities like respect, helpfulness and cooperation. By drawing all members into enthusiastic participation, a leader can build team identity and commitment. Furthermore, to maintain team unity and cooperation, a leader must be prepared to protect the group and its reputation and share the credit.

The Power of Self Disclosure

Leaders often want to be perceived as strong, authoritative figures with no chinks in their armor. However, leaders who pretend to be invulnerable are not helping themselves. Exposing your vulnerabilities can build trust and inspire high performance. Vulnerability makes people more trusting. They will feel safe to talk openly and expose their own vulnerabilities. This open dialogue also paves the way for people to become bolder, less afraid to make mistakes, and take more risks which can encourage creativity and innovation.

The Power of Feedback

It is difficult to grow without constructive feedback. Does the culture in your organization encourage feedback? Do people feel they have permission to give you feedback? We all have blind spots where people interpret us differently than we expect. We may even have hidden qualities and capabilities that are not obvious to us but are apparent to other people.

Self-Mastery begins with gaining a deeper knowledge of yourself and others. This can be a powerful way to build your own leadership capabilities and enhance team synergy.

Strathmore University Business School (SBS) recently held a self-awareness training with interactive sessions and assessments for the ABSA team as part of the ongoing ABSA Leadership and Management Essentials program.

The Customized Solutions Division of Executive Education is very proud of its ability to build on the expertise within SBS in terms of bespoke developmental Programmes and customized consulting solutions for our clients.
