University, we are constantly improving the journey of excellence through our graduates. Our success is only measurable in the calibre of our graduates who we continuously seek to improve and ourselves,&#8221; Dr. Edward Mungai, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning and Development at Strathmore University noted. Dr. Mungai was speaking during a graduation ceremony for 66 senior managers from Kenya Revenue Authority, graduating from a Customised Programme dubbed the Leader as Coach Programme.<\/p>\n<p>The Programme, designed for managers &#8211; either new or experienced &#8211; sought to impart skills geared towards creating a leader with an empathetic and personalised approach to managing employees.<\/p>\n<p>Course lead and Acting Executive Dean at SBS, Dr. Angela Ndunge, defined the Programme as one set to create a high-performance culture within an organization. Often, if the top is dysfunctional, it trickles down throughout the organization. Driving a culture that cuts across all levels of the organization and allows for prioritisation of performance, while also maintaining consideration for the personal attention that serves all employees despite their culture or personality is essential for effective management that makes an impression and drives results.<\/p>\n<p>The Programme also sought to entrench practical coaching skills aligned with Strathmore University\u2019s core values most relevant to the programme: service to society, excellence, lifelong learning, freedom with responsibility and personalised attention. The Leader as Coach programme strives to give participants an appreciation of ethical leadership, recognizable in their and their team\u2019s outputs. Participants regarded the Programme as essential for all new and experienced managers highlighting SBS\u2019s commitment to these values in how the Programme was delivered and participants\u2019 needs were met. One participant especially appreciated the personalised attention given to him and his fellow participants throughout the Programme &#8211; \u201cas an adult learner with competing priorities, it\u2019s easy to fall behind on the demands presented by the course load. However, SBS staff and faculty always went the extra mile to ensure that we reached the finish line,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the KRA Commissioner General, Dr. Mugambi Mwirigi, Commissioner, Kenya School of Revenue Administration (KESRA) emphasised the Authority\u2019s commitment to empowering and upskilling its employees. &#8220;In 2022 alone, we have trained more than 17,000 staff members to build staff capacity to meet our organization&#8217;s goals and objectives,&#8221; he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, during the presentation of the 2022\/2023 budget, the Kenyan government proposed that the Kenya Revenue Authority transition to the Kenya Revenue Service, to better instil values of service delivery and do away with the association of power and command an authority brings. Service to society is part and parcel of leadership duties; as the national agency for revenue collection, these services are required throughout the country and form the basis for Kenya\u2019s current and future development. Therefore, service to society is weaved into the mission and mandate of the Authority. One participant described the Programme as \u201cpart of the bigger pursuits of the Authority &#8211; on an individual and organisational level\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Our role as a knowledge partner allows for cross-pollination of ideas and values that inspire leaders to impart meaningful change and challenge participants to carry out their duties.
