Strathmore University Business School (SBS) on Tuesday, 2nd March 2020, graduated 40 County Cooperative leaders in the Public Policy Making Processes (PPMP) training Programme. This fourth cohort, comprised of County Co-operative Executives from Mandera, Uasin Gishu, Siaya, Kisumu, and Kisii Counties.<\/p>\n

The Public Policy-Making Process (PPMP) Programme is a capacity-building Programme created to support County Executive Committee Members (CECM), Chief Officers, County Cooperative Commissioners as well as County Cooperative Directors and Officers to increase their abilities to work with cooperative stakeholders to set the policy agendas for their counties.<\/p>\n

The Programme further aims to enhance participants\u2019 capacity in the areas of policy and legislative design, formulation, implementation and monitoring, and evaluation; negotiation and advocacy upskilling as well as stakeholder mapping and engagement and agenda-setting in the context of gender mainstreaming and cooperative development.<\/p>\n

PPMP is not exclusively an Executive Certificate Programme for policy stakeholders but is also a forum for participants to discuss issues affecting the Kenyan Co-operatives sector. How should the Kenyan Co-operative policy respond to the Co-operative movement\u2019s needs? How can the Co-operative movement rise to focus on market readiness in a highly competitive environment? How can the Co-operatives movement think critically about inclusivity and youth engagement in a rapidly changing world?<\/p>\n

The keynote speaker, CEC Member for Cooperatives and Enterprise Development-Uasin Gishu County, Ester Mutai, noted: \u201c Good understanding of public policy is essential for the governance and management of the various sectors of the economy including the cooperative sector. PPMP is a game-changer in how policy formulation and implementation is undertaken in Kenya.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking during the virtual graduation ceremony, USAID\/ CLEAR Program\u2019s Chief of Party, Kristin Wilcox Feldman emphasized the importance of Cooperative policy and legislation in setting the tone for the growth of the Kenyan Cooperative movement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs cooperatives, at all levels, we must support the movement to \u2018build back better\u2019 while also engaging in future back strategies where we purposefully think about growth opportunities in the sector, she added.<\/p>\n

The past three cohorts have seen up to 198 County Cooperatives Officials trained through this Programme. Participants from the previous cohorts came from Narok, Kiambu, Nandi, Homa Bay, Nyeri. Mombasa, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Kericho, Bomet, Tana River, Vihiga, Nakuru, and Bungoma counties along with the Council of Governor (CoG).<\/p>\n

The PPMP training curriculum was designed by Faculty members from the\u00a0Strathmore Institute of Public Policy and Governance (SIPPG)<\/a>\u00a0in partnership with Global Communities through the USAID\/ CLEAR Program.<\/p>\n
