Our Approach

To help the financial services industry in Kenya and the region in pursuit and delivery of the GRC goal, SBS has a four (4) pronged approach:

  1. Research
This annual activity which entails a quantitative and qualitative search and corroboration of trends, patterns and labyrinth of the existing and emerging markets for industry growth through accelerated insurance penetration and financial inclusion. The current growth rate of 2.71% in insurance and 4.5% in financial inclusion are still below the recommended global thresholds against the GDP and technology yardsticks that point towards greater capability and capacity
  2. Data Management
Together with our partners (ESRI and KPMG), we have designed and developed the Integrated Insurance Data Management system (IIDMS) for Data collation, storage, mining & analytics that address the theme for the 2019 GRC Summit as an offshoot of the 2018 summit panel and work group recommendations.
  3. Annual Governance, Risk and Compliance Summit
To bring industry stakeholders, resource people and regulators together for a two-day learning and sharing together to collectively maintain the momentum, build on the gains made and plan for the next year’s strategic action plans
  4. Capacity Building
Leadership and technical training to the industry through the various programmes and the continuous professional development for the industry professionals in the insurance sector.

Methodology

The two-day conference is designed to generate key strategic objectives per theme to be implemented, tracked and evaluated in the next 3 years to propel industry growth in the region within a well governed, compliant and lower risk environment.

The summit theme has been broken into the following five (5) sub-themes:

  • Protecting and enhancing market trust: boards expectations in governance framework in data driven processes
  • Mitigating against financial fraud and cybercrimes using proactive data management and analytic approaches
  • New market and regulatory developments: the impact on compliance programs and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
  • Combating obstacles to industry growth with a view to accelerating penetration and financial inclusion, and
  • Embracing adaptive leadership in emerging data management trends to align leadership capabilities and capacity in financial services sector

Upon presentation of the main theme and the sub themes by the various facilitators, there shall be specialized break-away sessions with subtheme chairs or facilitators engaging delegates to collate sufficient views on the identified subthemes. Thereafter, the facilitators shall present their resolutions to the plenary for adoption.

The resolutions and deliverables emanating from the discussions will form foundation of strategy implementation workshops on specific sub-themes before the next summit in 2020 and the subsequent 4 years to be hosted in different countries, tracking and reporting progress on the growth and uptake of products and services in the financial services space.

All this will be achieved through a closely managed data collection, analysis and reporting process coordinated by SBS. The objective will be to inform policy and regulation from an informed and engaged perspective with industry participants.

Target Audience

This summit brings together thought leaders and domain experts in governance, risk, and compliance to debate and explore strategies and solutions that will meet the demands of a dynamic business environment.

We invite all our stakeholders: customers, partners, analysts, industry experts and the GRC community to join us at the GRC Summit in Nairobi which will be held at Strathmore University Business School to engage and explore best practices that support our vision of a “High Powered GRC Summit for Africa”.

The conference will focus on exposing the participants to a system of GRC controls, tests, procedures protocols and guidelines that are created to endorse, develop and promote compliance with international standards for governance, risk management, 3rd party compliance, human rights and corporate social responsibility. In addition, the Summit will expose you to current debates aligned with maximizing business value by improving operational decision making and strategic planning.

The industry growth journey through a close focus on governance, risk, compliance and risk requires an integrated approach on all facets of the economy and operating environment.

We therefore look forward to welcoming you at this year’s GRC Summit to learn and share your valued views on the role data management plays in governance, risk and compliance in pursuit of growth by financials services players and beyond.
