Strathmore University’s Energy Research Centre (SERC) was Highly Commended at the prestigious GUPES Green Gown Awards ceremony, held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA. The awards recognize environmental and sustainability best practice within the further and higher education sectors.
The GUPES Green Gown Awards are supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES) and is open to GUPES members.
“SERC is a competence centre on renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainability. Winning the GUPES Award will bring recognition to our institution and thus make is easier to spread the concept of sustainability in the minds of the young in Kenya and the Eastern African region,” Prof Izael Pereira Da Silva, Director – SERC.
Each GUPES region has selected a category that is most appropriate for their region taking into consideration initiatives that are taking place within institutions in their region:
Africa: Continuous Improvement: Institutional Change;
Asia and the Pacific: Community Engagement;
Europe: Student Engagement;
Latin America and the Caribbean: Community Engagement;
North America: Student Engagement; and
West Asia: Continuous Improvement: Institutional Change.
SERC put up one of their projects PEER (under category 2 community engagement) for this award and managed to be listed among the finalists, and eventually winning the Highly Commended Award.
