Strathmore Graduates with Global Color

Friday, June 28th, 2019 saw Strathmore University confer 1001 graduates. 497 came from Strathmore University Business School with 347 from Bachelor of Commerce, 78 from Master of Business Administration, 16 MBA in Healthcare and 14 with Masters of Public Policy and Management.

The 15th Annual Graduation Ceremony was attended by notable guests such as His Excellency Deputy President Dr. William Ruto and his wife Rachel Ruto, Hon. Josphat Nanok (Governor, Turkana County), John Mututho (immediate former Chairman of the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Board), Johnston Busingye (Minister of Justice, Rwanda) Okiya Omtatah (Executive Director Kenyans for Justice and Development (KEJUDE) Trust, Prof. Mohamed Karama, Vice Chancellor, Umma University and Prof. Robert Gateru, Riara University Vice Chancellor.

In her speech, Mrs. Bernadette Musundi, Chair of the University Council, congratulated the 38 international students who graduated and urged them to be great brand ambassadors of the institution in their respective countries. She further encouraged the students to be global ‘stratizens’ in their careers and professions, thinking broadly and seeking excellence in their future endeavours. Regarding the University’s partnerships, Mrs. Musundi mentioned that the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kuehne Foundation in Germany will help in the management of logistics across organizations in Africa.  This partnership will further assist the university oversee cooperation in graduate research in the field of logistics.

Speaking during the ceremony, Prof. John Odhiambo, Strathmore University Vice Chancellor, commended the lecturers, mentors and students for their contribution in diverse ways as they have made the University outstanding with enviable global reputation. He went ahead to mention the history of the Macheo programme,  a mentorship programme for secondary school students from 8 schools in Kibera, Kangemi and Mukuru. He noted that the students some of whom were among the graduates, have been volunteering their free time to reach, mentor and spend time with the less privileged students.

Another achievement highlighted in his speech was the Strathmore Law School Students who won the 17th John H Jackson Moot Court on World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland beating Harvard Law School in the finals. “We all express our admiration and congratulations to these student teams for their marvellous performance in these contests. Thank you for coloring the global education space with Strathmore Colors”, said Prof. Odhiambo

Giving his valedictorian speech, Kennedy Mumo noted that to achieve greatness we need to think differently, be risk takers and be persistent. He challenged us not to re-live the lives of those who have come before us, because today`s problems may not be solved with yesterday`s solutions. He concluded by sharing a quote from Samuel Beckett, “Ever Tried. Ever Failed. No Matter What. Try Again. Fail Again. Fail Better”.
