Pope Francis has appointed Msgr. Fernando Ocáriz Braña as the Prelate of Opus Dei. As prescribed by Section 10 of the Strathmore University Charter, he becomes the new Chancellor of Strathmore University.
The Pro-Chancellor of Strathmore University, Rev. Fr. Silvano Ochuodho, said, “Given his exposure in the academic world, we look forward to his contribution and counsel, so as to lead the University in forging forward. I therefore urge all members of the University community to give thanks to God on this occasion, and support the new Chancellor with our prayers as he embarks on leading the Prelature of Opus Dei and the University”.
The Vice Chancellor Prof. John Odhiambo, has said, “The Strathmore family warmly welcomes the news of the appointment of our new Chancellor. We welcome him to the region and wish him all the best, assuring him of our support and prayers”.
Msgr. Ocáriz was born in Paris in 1944 and studied Physical Sciences at the University of Barcelona. He graduated in Theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in 1969 and obtained his PhD from the University of Navarra in 1971. That same year he was ordained a priest.
He is the author of numerous philosophical and theological works such as The Mystery of Jesus Christ (Theology Textbooks, 1998) and God as Father: In the Message of Blessed Josemaria Escriva (1998) among others. He has also been a consultant to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith since 1986 and a member of the Pontifical Roman Theological Academy since 1989.
