Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro, Director, Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM), Prof Stephen Sammut , visiting faculty at IHM, and Dr. Bernhards Ogutu, Director of Center for Research in Therapeutic Sciences (CREATES) are in the process of developing new research and training programmes in Health Systems and Global Public Health at Strathmore. As part of these activities, they have made initial contacts with colleagues at the New York University (NYU) School of Global Public Health to explore areas of potential collaboration in Health Systems and Global Public Health.
A team of senior faculty from NYU visited Strathmore University from Tuesday 2nd to Thursday 4th August 2016, to discuss possibilities of collaboration. The team comprised of the following:
The fourth member of the team, Prof. Edward Healton, Vice President, Georgetown University Medical School, will soon be joining the SBS, NYU team.
During their visit, the NYU team held discussions with Prof. Kokwaro, Prof. Sammut and Dr. Ogutu, and also paid courtesy calls to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Odhiambo, the acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (AA) Dr. Elizabeth Gachenga and Dr. George Njenga, Dean, SBS, on Tuesday 2nd August 2016.
On the same day (2nd August), Professor Edward Healton visited the Aga Khan University Medical School and Kiambu Level 4 Hospital. The NYU team also visited Ministry of Health Headquarters, National Aids Control Council (NACC) and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) on Wednesday 3rd August 2016.
A cocktail party in honor of the NYU team was held at SBS on the evening Thursday 4th August 2016 at which other members of Strathmore University had the opportunity to meet with the visitors. Prof. Kokwaro and his team at SBS plan further engagements with the NYU team in view of finalizing discussions through a strategic partnership.
