Strathmore Business School (SBS) has many years of running executive education and academic programs for individuals and Organizations targeting all levels of management and the board. It is with this backdrop and knowledge of the dynamic environment individuals and Organizations find themselves that SBS enhanced its already World class classroom experience with professional coaching and mentoring. Coaching and/or mentoring aims to translate knowledge into action and into a way of being. Organizations that are serious about driving and managing change have an opportunity to partner with us. Over the last 5 years SBS has coached and mentored CEOs, Senior managers, middle managers and New Managers from the top companies and small growing Businesses in the country. The extent of this services have been seen to reach county government through projects by county executive committee members in charge of health transforming the way healthcare is practically provided and managed.

 

DEFINITIONS

The International Coach Federation defines coaching as a partnering with a client in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today’s uncertain and complex environment.

Professional coaching focuses on setting goals, creating awareness, defining outcomes and managing personal and Organizational change. Coaching uses the power of asking more than telling. It seeks to support, enable, explore options and develop new mindsets and behaviors for change. Sometimes it’s helpful to understand coaching by distinguishing it from other personal or organizational support professions.

  • Therapy: Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or in relationships. The focus is often on resolving difficulties arising from the past that hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with the present in more emotionally healthy ways. Coaching, on the other hand, supports personal and professional growth based on self-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. These outcomes are linked to personal or professional success. Coaching is future focused. While positive feelings/emotions may be a natural outcome of coaching, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in one’s work or personal life. The emphases in a coaching relationship are on action, accountability, and follow through.

 

  • Consulting: Individuals or organizations retain consultants for their expertise. While consulting approaches vary widely, the assumption is the consultant will diagnose problems and prescribe and, sometimes, implement solutions. With coaching, the assumption is that individuals or teams are capable of generating their own solutions, with the coach supplying supportive, discovery-based approaches and frameworks.

 

  • Mentoring: A mentor is an expert who provides wisdom and guidance based on his or her own experience. Mentoring may include advising, counseling and coaching. The coaching process does not include advising or counseling, and focuses instead on individuals or groups setting and reaching their own objectives.

 

  • Training: Training programs are based on objectives set out by the trainer or instructor. Though objectives are clarified in the coaching process, they are set by the individual or team being coached, with guidance provided by the coach. Training also assumes a linear learning path that coincides with an established curriculum. Coaching is less linear without a set curriculum.

Individual Coaching: This is a face to face coaching. Common across all our programs.

Group Coaching: This type of coaching requires a group of individuals being coached jointly but with individual distinct projects. It is used in our academic programs to drive syndicate groups with different academic projects towards completion.

Team Coaching: Commonly used by Organizations that would like to have heads of various departments working together on a common goal. It has the benefit of solving silos in an Organization.

Business Coaching: This is usually a one on one face to face with business leaders or owners addressing specific business objectives. A lot of business owners or leaders have technical skills but lack business skills. Business Coaching seeks to help them apply business skills learnt in class to real business challenges resulting in measurable output such as increased revenue, better structures and processes etc -Family Business -Business Leader Coaching

Organizational Thematic Coaching: In an ever changing and complex work environment, Organizations are faced with unique challenges that need tailor made solutions. Customized coaching for organizations enables application of suitable solutions that reflect the actual situation and culture of the company in question

Culture: During change, culture is a key pillar to address. Team coaching around culture projects addresses specific culture indicators with tangible results as objectives. –

Change: One of the most sought after coaching intervention, change coaching is applicable to all levels in an Organization. It seeks to prepare, lead and manage individuals for change.

Leadership Development: This type of coaching supports talent identified by Organization for development as well as aids human resource managers in areas such as career transition

Transformational and Transcendental Coaching: This is the distinct coaching methodology that separates us from the rest. Grounded in our strong anthropological and philosophical foundations, these two types of coaching go beyond the visible behavior manifestations to address deeper aspects of values, attitudes, beliefs and Worldview. This is what sustainable behavior change is all about. Moreover, the coaching seeks to create awareness of the impact of one’s action on a larger scale beyond self.

Consultancy (Embedding Coaching Culture): SUBS can assess organization’s readiness to embed coaching, guide the embedding process, supervise internal coaches standards and assess impact of the coaching and mentoring initiatives.

Coach Training Programs: SUBS trains individuals and Organizations that seek to acquire formal coaching and mentoring skills –

Open: Coaching program open to anyone –

Customized: Coaching programs tailor made for a specific company and trains their managers exclusively.

Certified: This are formal coach training programs in conjunction with our partner Universities. They are recognized and certified by International Coaching accrediting bodies. They offer participants long taining hours, mentor coaching, internationally certified trainers and supervison including assessments and exams. The class size is limited to 15. –

Non-Certified: Unlike the certified ones, non-certified coach training programs are more flexible in hours in class, class size and professional qualifications of trainers.

Staff Coaching: SUBS extends the benefits of coaching to its staff for their personal and professional development.

Executive Mentoring: This service will be provided by senior executives with immense professional experience. Unlike undergraduate mentoring, this type of mentoring will focus on executive mentoring i.e. aiding inexperienced newly appointed executives that need individuals with more experience than them to tell them what to do to carry out their new executive duties.

(Q2) How do I know whether coaching is what I need

  1. To determine whether you or your company could benefit from coaching, start by summarizing what you would expect to accomplish in coaching. When an individual or business has a clear idea of the desired outcome, a coaching partnership can be a useful tool for developing a strategy for how to achieve that outcome with greater ease. Since coaching is a partnership, ask yourself whether collaboration, other viewpoints, and new perspectives are valued. Also, ask yourself whether you or your business is ready to devote the time and the energy to making real changes. If the answer is yes, then coaching may be a beneficial way to grow and develop. A coachability and or mentorability assessment is carried out before any matching is done.

(Q3) Are these coaches and mentors only accessible to people attending a program with the Business School

(Q4) How do you identify the coach and/or mentor for me

  1. SUBS Coaching and Mentoring Department undertakes a thorough assessment of you through its coach request form. The agenda you would like addressed coupled by your personality and personal details are key factors to match you with the right coach

(Q5) What if I don’t like the coach and/or mentor assigned to me

  1. Although this rarely happens, the Business School provides for a change of a coach or mentor by filling out a change of coach or mentor form(click here) providing reasons for the request before approval of the same is communicated.

(Q6) What happens in a coaching engagement at SUBS

  1. A pre-session assessment is done to establish coachability (coach request form filled first) before the matching starts. An elaborate and collaborative matching process follows to identify suitable coach upon which the coach and coachee are connected. All coaching engagements are managed via a Coach Management System (CMS) including scheduling, feedback and evaluations Contracts are drawn out to establish roles and responsibilities as well as terms and conditions before coaching sessions begin. The coaching department organizes anonymous mid review evaluations of coaching needs met as well as one comprehensive one at the end of the coaching engagement If the coachee wants to continue, a new contract will be established.
